1984 is a dystopian novel published in 1949 by British writer and poet George Orwell that has stood the test of time. The novel is one the most referenced works of fiction in relation to government power and corruption. The cover shows a silhouette being looked at through television screens, which represents how Big Brother is constantly watching its citizens as well as the main character, Winston. The eyes watching him are blue, which represent the cold authority of Big Brother. Three of the four covers use red type, which represents power, danger, and anger. The first cover's type imitates the blocky type used in soviet propaganda, because the book was partially inspired by
Soviet Russia. The second cover's type is in perspective to give the audience a sense of depth and drama. The third cover's title put an emphasis on Orwell's name because of how well known Orwell and his work is. The fourth cover has one of the Big Brother sayings used throughout the book as a tagline to hook the reader in.
